During colonial times, fashion was probably not a big deal. People generally wore similar looking clothes just in different colors. French Revolution womens fashion was probably not even existent in the lower status households. Only the rich and powerful were able to buy nice elegant clothing.

The poof was quite popular back then and thank goodness it is not one now. There are plenty of other things to choose from in the present day. We really are lucky that most all of the uglier styles back then have not made it through to our modern era of clothing and style.
